Minister of Mining Thoko Tembo has emphasized the need for accurate and responsible reporting in the mining sector as journalists gather in Salima for a Media Training Workshop on Reporting Mining and Mineral-Related Issues.
Tembo said mining is increasingly becoming a key pillar of Malawi’s economic transformation, with the country’s vast mineral resources offering opportunities for employment, investment, increased government revenue and sustainable development.

He stressed that informed and factual reporting is essential to ensuring that the public fully understands the opportunities and challenges within the mining sector.
Director of the Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA), Lloyd Muhara, noted that despite the sector’s potential, it continues to face challenges, including misinformation surrounding licensing procedures and mining activities.

Muhara urged journalists to verify information from credible sources and report accurately to help promote public understanding of the sector.

One of the participants, Patrick Kachere from Umunthu FM, described the training as timely, pledging that journalists will prioritize verified information and strengthen collaboration with relevant authorities.
The workshop is expected to enhance the capacity of media practitioners to report accurately and contribute to transparency and accountability in Malawi’s mining sector.
